Application of Science and Technology for Community Water-Related Disaster Risk Reduction: Thailand Good Practices following His Majesty the King’s Initiative towards Sustainable Development

In a predominantly agricultural country like Thailand, “Water is Life”. However, water-related hazards such as flood and landslide, drought and saltwater intrusion affect people’s lives and cause economic losses. In addition, wastewater caused by unsustainable practices at household level as well as agriculture and industrial sectors is increasingly a problem.

The Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII) of the Ministry of Science and Technology have implemented many projects in all regions of Thailand over the last 20 years. This publication shares good practices generated from ten such projects. The good practices demonstrate successes in an integrated approach that promotes application of science and technology in community-based water resources management to reduce flood and drought risks while building sustainable agriculture production and resilient livelihoods. Public-Private-People Partnership has been the key to success.

The HAII are pleased to share there good practices . We hope that they will contribute to more innovative solutions for the challenges of increasing flood and drought risks to achieve the world’s shared goals of ending poverty and hunger.
